Spidey sense. Gut feeling. Hunch. Intuition. Little voice in your ear. A twinge in your heart. A sinking feeling in your stomach. Knowingness, it is all knowingness ….. and its all there. Regardless of what you call it. We all have it. No matter how it shows up and it does show up slightly different for each of us.
It is often said that reflecting back gives us more of a sense of where we are and not just how far we have come. When I think of my younger years, I definitely see where my ‘knowingness’ came into play. I wouldn’t have called it that back then….but that is definitely what it was.
I grew up in a small town on the east coast of Canada. To say I have deep family roots there would be an understatement. My Dad’s lineage goes back to the early 1700’s when they immigrated from England. The first member of the Chapman family created a lasting legacy in many ways in the area, including a community called Chapman Settlement where there were lots of moose for hunting. The house they built back then is now a Canadian Historical Site. Many artifacts regarding William Chapman fills a complete section in a museum in the Fort Beausejour National Park site at the Nova Scotia & New Brunswick border.
Life growing up was filled with family, laughter and lots of traditions. Outside activities, music, gardening and time at the ocean at our family cottage each summer were a big part of life. It was during my last year of high school that the question of ‘what was next?’ became really prevalent for me. It wasn’t a matter of knowing the exact answer, but a sense of something else or beyond what existed in my home town. After high school, I headed off to University 3 hours away in Halifax for 3 years, always returning home in the summers. My last year at University was coming to an end and graduation was getting closer … and my ‘knowingness’ was getting stronger that there was something else beyond what I was currently aware of.
It was mid-summer that last year when I booked a flight to Alberta, bought a trunk, and called a few places looking for a possible roommate. My parents were not at home that day. Imagine my parents surprise that evening when I announced my plans that were already in place! I took clear action and I was not giving them an opportunity of discussion or rationalizing why it was or was not a good idea. Logically I did not have family in Alberta and was moving to a large city ‘all by myself’. Within my family lineage, very few members had left the area. I was 20 years old with no exact plan in place other than an acceptance to another education program in Alberta. Packed in my suitcase was my strong ‘knowingness’ of this was what I was to do. I think back to that time and think about my lack of concern or doubt…..and yet it was so clear. I clearly understood that no interference would come into play with executing my plan being guided by my ‘knowingness’.
Our ‘knowingness’ is always present and consistently guiding us in the direction of our soul’s growth and expansion. Many times we have experienced what I call ‘post knowingness’. That is those times when something happens and you exclaim ‘Shit, I knew that was going to happen!’ or ‘I had a sense something like that would occur’. All of us are in a different place of trusting our ‘knowingness’ and many factors can be coming into play with that. Perhaps as children we attempted to express our knowingness of something to a parent or adult and that was quickly squashed. Whether that was discredited or not honored once or many times, it likely created a belief to keep our ‘knowingness’ to ourselves, not honor it, or it isn’t something of value.
Our ‘knowingness’ IS to be honored, valued and trusted. It is a deep part of us that is guiding us, even though we don’t fully recognize all the aspects of it yet. Think of it like a ‘SOUL GPS’. Often our ‘knowingness’ is prompting or nudging us to take action. Action that we likely might not take on our own without that nudge. It comes at time that perhaps we are at a ‘fork in our path’ and this ‘nudge’ is guiding us to take action in a way that is beyond what we would typically do.
So many times I have silently grinned when a client says to me …. “well I am not intuitive at all!” And even by the end of our first session, that is completely proven otherwise! We are ALL intuitive and have a ‘knowingness’, and it is always present…..and once we recognize its presence, we take off with it so easily. It’s not hard…..after all, its part of who we are.
As children we are all taught so many aspects of life. How to be polite, respectful and use our manners, how to take care of ourselves, learning when it is safe to cross the road, etc. Intuition or ‘knowingness’ hasn’t been part of our upbringing for most of us and yet it is something that is such a big part of our being. Imagine never being shown how to hold and swing a baseball bat…….and yet naturally you are a highly skilled baseball player. Will it be awkward the first time you hold the bat? Yeah, for sure! But you will be hitting home runs before you know it!!
Wow! I really like the design and format. Nicely done! Lots of good information and nicely written. Congratulations!
